Univie Teaching Award Social Sciences 2025

For the first time, the Faculty of Social Sciences is presenting the Teaching Award Social Sciences in 2025. With this award, we would like to make commitment to teaching visible and recognize outstanding teaching.

A total of 3 teaching awards will be presented to individual lecturers or teaching teams (in the case of team teaching) for courses already held. Students, student representatives, tutors, lecturers and teaching staff are cordially invited to nominate courses that they consider to be outstanding.

Both third-party and self-nominations are possible.

  • Focus in terms of content

    Category “Successfully researching social phenomena” (1 prize)

    The award is given to courses that aim to encourage students to engage empirically with socially relevant topics.

    Category - Young Talent Award: “Innovative and interactive teaching methods” (2 prizes)

    The award is given to courses in Bachelor's degree programs and extension curricula, in particular courses taught by early career researchers or early career teachers (i.e. internal and external pre-docs and postdocs).

  • Awarding of prizes

    The award ceremony will take place on June 3, 2025 in "Aula am Campus" together with the annual sowi:doc awards ceremony.

  • Price money

    The prize money of € 3,000 (gross) is not earmarked for a specific purpose and goes directly to the winners.

  • Nomination

    All courses held at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Vienna in the summer semester 2024 or winter semester 2024/25 can be nominated.

    The following persons (groups) are entitled to nominate candidates: 

    - Representatives of study programs for external nominations

    - Groups of at least 3 students for external nominations

    - Lecturers can nominate their courses themselves

    - SPLs or colleagues can also nominate courses.

  • Deadline for submission and nomination

    Please note that the submission and nomination deadline for external and own nominations is 16.04.2025. In the case of external nominations, the nominees will be informed by the faculty and asked to send a submission by 30.04.2025.

    Deadline for third-party and self-nominations
    Persons (groups) who wish to make an external nomination are requested to send an e-mail to teachingaward.sowi@univie.ac.at stating the name of the course and the lecturer as well as a reason why the course is outstanding.

    For self-proposals, submitters are asked to write a concise, meaningful description of their course using a submission form. Please submit all documents by the deadline by e-mail to teachingaward.sowi@univie.ac.at by the deadline.

    Selection criteria

    The category-related selection criteria for both awards can be found in the Description of the Univie Teaching Award Social Sciences 2025 (PDF for download). In addition, the following cross-category documents will be considered:

    •  LV evaluation (if available) and

    •  the meaningful and complete course announcement in the course catalog.

    All prizes awarded will be announced on this website. No information can be provided about non-award-winning courses.
